A Performance Filled with Love and Loss. When Matt Mauser stepped onto the Americaās Got Talent stage in 2021, he carried a deeply personal story with him. His wife, Christina Mauser, had died in the January 2020 helicopter crash that also claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and six others. Christina was a basketball coach and mother of three, and her loss changed Mattās life forever. Through music, he hoped to honor her memory and share a message of hope with their children.
A Song He Struggled to Finish. Matt chose Phil Collinsā āAgainst All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)ā for his audition. Although he began confidently, the emotions behind the song eventually overwhelmed him, and he was unable to finish the performance. Rather than turning away from the moment, the judges responded with compassion. Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara stood to applaud, and all four voted yes, allowing him to advance.
His Journey Beyond the Audition. Mattās competition journey continued through a later Wildcard opportunity, where he performed Michael BublĆ©ās āThe Way You Look Tonight.ā He ultimately did not advance to the main live shows, and Dustin Tavella won Season 16. Still, Mattās experience on the show gave him a platform to speak about Christina and explain why he wanted his children to believe that happiness and new dreams were still possible after tragedy.
Keeping Christinaās Legacy Alive. After the show, Matt continued his work as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer. He also established the Christina Mauser Foundation to support female student-athletes through scholarships. His memoir, Bittersweet Treasures: A Fatherās Journey Through Loss & Healing, explores grief, fatherhood, and learning to move forward. Mattās story reminds viewers that healing does not mean forgetting someone you love; it means finding ways to carry their memory into the future.
