A Husbandās Tribute Through Music. Matt Mauserās appearance on Americaās Got Talent in 2021 was about more than demonstrating his singing ability. After losing his wife, Christina, in the January 26, 2020 helicopter crash, Matt faced life as a father raising their three children without his partner. Christina had been a basketball coach whose life was also tragically cut short alongside Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant, and six others. Matt wanted his audition to celebrate her memory and help his children understand that life could still hold hope.
When Emotion Took Over. For his audition, Matt selected āAgainst All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)ā by Phil Collins. As he sang, the meaning behind the lyrics became increasingly difficult for him to manage, and he broke down before completing the song. The judges responded with a standing ovation, and Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara each gave him a yes. The moment showed how a deeply personal performance can connect with an audience beyond technical perfection.
More Than a Television Competition. Matt later returned for a Wildcard performance, singing Michael BublĆ©ās āThe Way You Look Tonight,ā but he did not advance to the main live shows. Although he did not win the competition, his appearance helped bring attention to his familyās story. He continued performing professionally and remained committed to raising his children while finding ways to preserve Christinaās memory and the values she had shared with them.
Turning Remembrance into Action. Matt created the Christina Mauser Foundation to provide scholarships for female student-athletes, reflecting Christinaās passion for basketball and supporting young people pursuing their goals. He also wrote Bittersweet Treasures: A Fatherās Journey Through Loss & Healing, sharing more about bereavement, parenting, and rebuilding life after loss. His journey offers a thoughtful reminder that grief is not something people simply leave behind. With time, support, and meaningful ways to remember loved ones, it is possible to keep moving forward while honoring the people who shaped our lives.
